Location & Map

Created for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, Seattle Center calls itself “the nation’s best gathering place.” It certainly has a lot to offer, including cultural venues, sports arenas, entertainment options, the Science Center, and a Food Court, in addition to beautiful grounds. It is easily accessible by car, bus or riding the monorail from downtown Seattle.

This year we’ll be in the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall, located at 299 Mercer Street and directly across from the convenient Seattle Center parking facility. There are numerous spots nearby for impromptu gatherings, including a McMenamin’s pub for you Oregonians. For your dinner choices, a number of restaurants are within walking distance.

Hotel Information

For out-of-towners, we have made arrangements with the following hotels in near the center for a special rate.

Pensione Nichols

1923 1st Ave
E-Mail: info@pensionenichols.com
http://pensionenichols.com/
Phone: 206-441-7125

Put “AGILE” in the notes when you register online or tell them you are registering for the agile conference if you reserve by phone.

Our conference rate is $80 per night; parking is $14 per 24 hours.

This is a small bed and breakfast hotel, but for this rate they are not serving breakfast. We are providing breakfast at the conference.

Notes on Pensione Nichols: This B&B hotel has a large, glorious English country shabby chic common room on the third floor with a glorious view of the sound where you can take your bottle of wine and talk all night. The hotel backed up against the Public Market. We negotiated a no-breakfast rate since we are providing breakfast at the conference, and the hotel doesn’t start serving until 8a. Be prepared for a couple of long flights of stairs and no elevators, but the location and the view are worth it. The hotel is nine blocks from the Seattle Center and three blocks from the monorail.

Mediterranean Inn

425 Queen Anne Avenue North
http://www.mediterranean-inn.com/
Phone: 206-428-4700 or 866-525-4700

We have a conference rate of $79/night for single queens (100% non-smoking, and all with kitchenettes), net and non-commission-able (no third party bookings eligible). Ask for the AONW conference discount if calling in or use AONW as your discount code on the web site. NOTE: The online discount code may not be available until late on 1/13 due to technical difficulties . . .

Parking is $10/night. Both are valid from Feb 3rd to Feb 8th, any number of nights. Upgrades to Kings or Double/Doubles will be an additional $10/night, limited only by availability (all the above is limited by availability).

This is a recently updated and refreshed older hotel right next to Seattle Center.

Additional accomodations are available at several hotels close to the Center or in the Seattle downtown area. Additional parking is also available in the area.

There are numerous hotels available close to the Center and in the nearby Seattle downtown area. Watch this page for news of special rates for Agile Open Northwest attendees.

After a long career in IT for a local government agency, he has managed an independent consultancy since 1995, with clients ranging from government agencies to internet startups. Through his company, Poole Consulting, he works with teams to help them adopt agile practices and with managers to help them understand how to work with agile teams.

Charlie specializes in the role of tests in agile development and regularly presents workshops on topics like Test-Driven Development and Communicating with Tests. He is the primary maintainer of the open source NUnit Test Framework, supporting cross-platform development of managed code, and the author of the NUnitLite embedded framework. He is currently working on a number of test-integration tools, including one for the Visual Studio environment.

Charlie maintains a developer-oriented website at charliepoole.org and a blog at nunit.com/blogs. He developed the original Agile Open Northwest website.

Diana Larsen

As a presenter, Jeremy favors interactive and group techniques and pulls from disciplines as diverse as Theatre Improv and Montessori.

Find Jeremy at http://jeremylightsmith.com or @lightsmith.

Michael J. Tardiff

I love hearing what people want to do and helping them see the ways in which they might do it. In doing the work, we discover the work that needs to be done.

For the last decade that’s been my story: facilitator, trainer, coach, mentor, guide, storyteller, provocateur. Happiness for me is working with a team of people who are different from me; together, we serve others better than I could alone. Along the way, I’ve held all the software roles that begin with “p” and end with “manager.” Twice I was a director at a growing startup. My early years were spent technically writing.

I write things at FeelingAgile.com. Still available on iTunes is the “The Agile Coach” podcast. @mjt on Twitter is me being short. Invite me and I’ll talk, wherever and whenever you like. Agile Open Northwest’s annual Open Space brings me joy. And I find peace sailing the waters north of Seattle.

Rebecca Wirfs-Brock

I invented the set of design practices known as Responsibility-Driven Design (RDD) and by accident started the x-DD meme. Along the way I authored two popular object design books. I jog (even in the rain).

In my work I help people hone their design and architecture skills, address architecture risks, and manage and reduce technical debt. In addition to coaching and personal mentoring, I conduct workshops on Pragmatic TDD, enterprise application design, agile design skills and thinking, being agile about system qualities, and Agile Architecture.

I am program director of the Agile Alliance’s Experience Reports Program and co-chair of the 2016 Agile Conference Experience Reports Track. Another interest of mine is patterns. I am on the Board of the Hillside Group and recently I’ve written patterns about sustainable architecture, agile QA, and adaptive systems architectures. If you are interested in writing about your experiences or sharing your wisdom in pattern form, contact me. I can help you turn your itch for writing into the written word.

You can read my blog at www.wirfs-brock.com/blog and find articles and patterns on my resources page.

Troy Frever

Troy Frever discovered XP in 2000, after two decades as a professional software developer. Since then he has been an Extreme Programmer and Coach for a number of companies in the Seattle area, including Active Voice, Cisco Systems, Quicksilver Technology, Aviarc Corporation, RealNetworks, Smilebox, Fanzo, and Ripl. He is currently having a grand time as co-founder and CTO of Zipline. When he’s not writing unit tests or refactoring mercilessly, Troy enjoys backpacking and skiing with his family and playing Ultimate Frisbee. Troy is also a former organizer of the Seattle Extreme Programming Users Group (SXPUG) and co-founder of Seattle’s Beyond Agile user group.

Tom Perry

Tom Perry has been working in software development for over 20 years. He has been fortunate enough to work on teams at startup companies as well as within large corporations in the Fortune 100 and the State and Federal Government. His background includes testing, development, project/program management, coaching /mentoring and training. As part of his involvement in the greater agile community, he led the Seattle chapter of the APLN.

Currently, Tom works at Visa as a Senior Director and Agile Coach. He is very actively engaged in the agile community, speaking at local and international conferences and sharing his passion for building insanely great teams.

Check out his blog for more information about his writing, presentations and current projects http://agiletools.wordpress.com or follow him on twitter @tlperry.
