About the 2017 Conference in Portland

THEME

Have we forgotten the FIRST line of the Agile Manifesto, “individuals and interactions over processes and tools?” Have the 12 principles been left behind? In the past 15 years since its signing, many teams have gone along to ride the agile wave and organically grow a mishmash of practices to declare themselves Agile. Meanwhile, the Agile movement has matured to see a plethora of best practices books, prescriptive scaling solutions, and multiple certifications; lots of HOW.

  • HOW can we put the WHY back into agile?
  • WHY is your team doing Agile?
  • WHAT did you hope to achieve with agile?
  • Did you, or are you still striving to achieving it?

So let’s talk about HOW do we stop telling teams the HOW of Agile and start reminding them of WHY.

WHERE IS IT?

The Leftbank Annex in lovely Portland, Oregon

Coming from out of town? We arrange special rates with local hotels. Check out the Location section for more information.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Location & Map

Agile Open Northwest 2017 convenes at the Leftbank Annex, a fabulous and funky former airplane-part machine shop turned event center.

A stone’s throw from the Pearl District, the Leftbank Annex is located one block east of the Leftbank Project and across the street from the Rose Garden. The Leftbank Annex is easily accessible by bus, MAX, and streetcar. The area is a major bicycle corridor and is easily accessible from every direction. A number of restaurants are within walking distance.

PARKING NOTICE

If you’re from out of town and staying at the Crowne Plaza or anywhere in town, we hope you’ll walk or take public transit to the Leftbank Annex.

If you need to drive to the Leftbank Annex, limited paid parking is available at the Rose Quarter East Garage and at a nearby public lot. Parking for Wednesday and Friday will be $8 for the day. Please note that parking at the small Leftbank Annex lot is reserved for AONW volunteers, those needing reasonable accommodation, and Leftbank Annex staff. If you are unfamiliar with the Rose Quarter, please refer to this printable map to orient yourself to the venue and nearby parking.

One complication this year - on Thursday night there is a Blazer’s game and the Rose Quarter organization has made the decision to not allow day parking in the garage because they have pre-sold parking for the game. So we are working with The Left Bank Annex management to find alternative parking arrangements. At this moment, we do not have a definite plan but the mostly likely scenario is that parking will be available at the Oregon Convention Center, a short trolley ride away from LBA. Parking at the ORCC should be $10 for the day and some trolley tickets will be provided by LBA. We will make an announcement at both the Wednesday morning circle and evening news about what the parking arrangements will be for Thursday.

HOTEL INFORMATION

For out-of-towners, the Leftbank Annex is within walking distance of a number of affordable places to stay.

We have arranged for a courtesy discount with the nearby Crowne Plaza for $149/night for a limited number of rooms. This rate is good until 23 Jan 2017, so book now! Use the reservation button below to book your room and receive the discount. You can also call their reservations at (866) 242-1264.

Discount Reservation Link: click here

The Crowne Plaza is 6 minute walk from the Leftbank Annex and has received good reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor. Parking is plentiful but is $20 per night. The hotel is walking distance from the Convention Center MAX station for those arriving by air and not wanting a rental car.

Other Nearby Hotels

Below are the other nearby hotels that are within walking distance of the LeftBank Annex. These provide a range comfort and affordability.

Hosts

AONW 2017 is hosted by this year’s conference chairs and the Agile Open Northwest Board of Directors

AONW 2017 Conference Co-Chairs

Michaela Hutfles

Michaela Hutfles is a sideways E-shaped person (rather than T) with three major depths: agile software development, earth-building and performing arts of all flavors. For a salary, she coaches agile thinking and self-management to software developers and keeps teams focused on continuous improvement, growth mindset, and general meta-cognition. At the moment she does this at Amazon. She’s building a tiny house on the Olympic Peninsula using clay, straw, and sand. She dreams of someday starting a tiny arts foundation called Dionysus Giving. Because it amuses her, Michaela often claims to raise champion naked mole rats.

Andrew Rux

Andrew Rux left GE Healthcare in 2002 to go work for a start-up just beginning its agile journey. He had to transition from a formal checklist project manager to an adaptive product owner. In that time, he’s worked for several other start-ups converting ideas into products delivered to the healthcare market. His interests lie in combining a focus on the customer experience, being an exceptional product owner to his teams, while also being keen on how his teams get their work done. At present, he’s working on a new start-up that’s just at the idea stage, while fostering a rescue dog named Flicka.

AONW Board of Directors

Diana Larsen

Diana Larsen served three years as Chair of the Agile Alliance board of directors and served terms as a board member for the group. As a partner in FutureWorks Consulting, Diana consults with leaders and teams to create work processes where innovation, inspiration, and imagination flourish. With more than fifteen years of experience working with technical professionals, she brings focus to the human side of organizations, teams, and projects. Diana co-authored Agile Retrospectives: Making Good Teams Great! with Esther Derby, Liftoff: Launching Agile Teams and Projects with Ainsley Nies, Virtuosity with Willem Larsen and writes occasional [blog posts (http://futureworksconsulting.com/blog) and articles.

Diana discovers solutions and possibilities where others only find barriers and obstacles.

Ian Savage

A quality evangelist, Ian Savage is a veteran software developer, quality engineer, and manager with experience in manufacturing, financial services, construction project estimating, and software security. For more than thirty years, he has worked to improve productivity and software quality through rigorous development methods and processes and now through the pragmatic application of agile methods.

He founded/co-founded various Pacific Northwest software and quality volunteer organizations. By day he works with the Quality Initiatives Team at McAfee focusing on metrics, static analysis, and quality systems. His present interests are software security, insourcing vs. outsourcing, and quality training. Like many others, Ian looks forward to retirement or Career 2.0.

Jeremy Lightsmith

Jeremy Lightsmith spends most of his time and energy building highly performant software development teams.

A seasoned agile coach, trainer, and facilitator, Jeremy excels at creating environments where teams can discover how they work best. He has a deep understanding of agile, and is constantly looking for better ways to share knowledge and collaborate. As a presenter, Jeremy favors interactive and group techniques and pulls from disciplines as diverse as Theatre Improv and Montessori.

Find Jeremy at http://jeremylightsmith.com or @lightsmith.

Michael J. Tardiff

I love hearing what people want to do and helping them see the ways in which they might do it. In doing the work, we discover the work that needs to be done.

For the last decade that’s been my story: facilitator, trainer, coach, mentor, guide, storyteller, provocateur. Happiness for me is working with a team of people who are different from me; together, we serve others better than I could alone. Along the way, I’ve held all the software roles that begin with “p” and end with “manager.” Twice I was a director at a growing startup. My early years were spent technically writing.

I write things at FeelingAgile.com. Still available on iTunes is the “The Agile Coach” podcast. @mjt on Twitter is me being short. Invite me and I’ll talk, wherever and whenever you like. Agile Open Northwest’s annual Open Space brings me joy. And I find peace sailing the waters north of Seattle.

Rebecca Wirfs-Brock

I invented the set of design practices known as Responsibility-Driven Design (RDD) and by accident started the x-DD meme. Along the way I authored two popular object design books. I jog (even in the rain).

In my work I help people hone their design and architecture skills, address architecture risks, and manage and reduce technical debt. In addition to coaching and personal mentoring, I conduct workshops on Pragmatic TDD, enterprise application design, agile design skills and thinking, being agile about system qualities, and Agile Architecture.

I am program director of the Agile Alliance’s Experience Reports Program and co-chair of the 2016 Agile Conference Experience Reports Track. Another interest of mine is patterns. I am on the Board of the Hillside Group and recently I’ve written patterns about sustainable architecture, agile QA, and adaptive systems architectures. If you are interested in writing about your experiences or sharing your wisdom in pattern form, contact me. I can help you turn your itch for writing into the written word.

You can read my blog at www.wirfs-brock.com/blog and find articles and patterns on my resources page.

Troy Frever

Troy Frever discovered XP in 2000, after two decades as a professional software developer. Since then he has been an Extreme Programmer and Coach for a number of companies in the Seattle area, including Active Voice, Cisco Systems, Quicksilver Technology, Aviarc Corporation, RealNetworks, Smilebox, Fanzo, and Ripl. He is currently having a grand time as co-founder and CTO of Zipline. When he’s not writing unit tests or refactoring mercilessly, Troy enjoys backpacking and skiing with his family and playing Ultimate Frisbee. Troy is also a former organizer of the Seattle Extreme Programming Users Group (SXPUG) and co-founder of Seattle’s Beyond Agile user group.
