Be a ListKeeper

AboutUs - http://www.aboutus.org/
Wiki is a dictionary - give a name and a page about that name - Name is not URL something that you can pronounce
AboutUs - A wiki about domains - giant catalog - people would get lost - thought community would organize manually - manual organizing never took off - find a way to connect different pages
Used MediaWiki notion of Categories (Tags) - Show me every page in a category, i.e. Business
Simple things to help organize the wiki o Ranking - what interest people have in the page (how many times its been viewed) pages listed by score - AboutUs ranking algorithm o Short summary - done by hand o Lists are automatic - look something like search results (i.e. Agile and Embedded) o People can assist with the categorization by removing categories - tend the list
Categories are ok - but did not want to put them into a hierarchy - need to be easy to add/delete tags, provide short summary, etc.
Do you allow anyone to edit categories? Yes
Duplication of resources - Duplication of categories ? Yes - We want people to learn precise categories but allow for variations - things tend to drift to the right name - if people are casual there is not as much buy-in - need to find the right organization
Will people manipulate the ranking? - that is expected and monitored
Do people who post things on Wiki get the content in the right place? People would put content in the wrong place at the beginning but would later learn based on feedback
http://www.aboutus.org/best-sites/Agile - entered Agile in the search
AgileWebDevelopment is not summarized - ranked #4 here probably based on traffic - ranking is largely from the site - there are some partners who do provide information - Alexa made their top 1,000,000 sites public which is also factored in
Have you open sourced your contributions to MediaWiki? Yes - but its complicated
How would this ranking system help if the word is common? They search the tags not the text
r-project.org - navigate based on statistics and math tag - http://www.aboutus.org/best-sites/statistics/math
Is this the right structure? This is what a list keeper does - if its not right change it
Need to have a login to provide a summary or tag
Does the list ranking update dynamically? Yes
How often does it look at traffic? Page Views - Use your own internal data - how many edits also raises the rank because people care about the specific site
Tagspace, ranking Algorithm, results are content - list itself is what is tended
How do you get new important stuff exposed? What will happen is that important thing will be tagged appropriately and get the traffic - being at the top of the Agile list is harder than being at the top of Agile Embedded
Looked at traffic weighted over the last month
Precise ranking algorithm is not public - would invite gaming - parameters are discussed
What if you made their ranking algorithm public - could it move to the right place as opposed to gaming - pages are content and not search results - if you are willing to declare yourself as the keeper of the list - maybe we let you change the naming - provide a calculation - you could invent your own ranking
Reputation - voting was considered but not implemented simple ranking - surprised how that worked
Is list keeping going to be a well-known term - would love it to be a well-known term - made the list now need to focus attention on the list keepers
AboutUs has a convenient page name - does that assist organizaing - page names are something that could enter vocabulary - cause good names - when you have a meeting - stop the meeting - review what was important - what are the proper wiki names for those ideas - make that the name as opposed to minutes - where are things going as opposed to just a diary - engineer the vocabulary
Is there a place on AboutUs where we can find out about list keeping - check the aboutus blog (http://blog.aboutus.org/)
