The Craft of Agile Software Development is Alive
at AONW

By David Whitlock

Attending Agile Open Northwest always provides me with insight into how the Agile Principles can help organize people around challenging problems to sustainably provide solutions that make an impact.  Topics at AONW often range from forming new teams to effectively measure complex systems to which methodologies are fit to purpose in a particular environment.  But in Open Space, any topic is fair game and people vote with their feet to provide an audience for the discussions that resonate most with them.  And, for many participants, that gives them a chance to explore the technical side of Agile and how the craft of software development can be enhanced by an Agile mindset.

At Agile Open Northwest, I’ve learned about (and experienced!) leading-edge contemporary development practices like Mob Programming, identifying and eliminating toil within day-to-day development, integrating deliberate learning into a development team, and experiential coding interviews that authentically assess development skills without bias.  I’ve gotten to interact with experienced practitioners who honed their viewpoints and toolkits through careers built on the successful application of Agile development practices.  These sessions wonderfully complement the topics that focus more on work management and human dynamics to provide a well-rounded experience that highlights all aspects of a software development system.

Whether you're a Scrum Master who wants to better understand the day-to-day reality of the developers they work with or an Engineer who is looking to add some new tools to their toolbox, you’ll find an engaged community of practitioners and thought leaders at Agile Open Northwest. Come prepared to be surprised!  You never know what you’re going to learn.
